Usually, Dual Cores are the essentials (?minimums?) for these generations of emulators. Not to say that you cannot run (some of) them with a single core, just not effeciently. Also, Graphics cards are important too, especially for those that run off Hardware settings. Im not too knowledgable about what are the best graphics cards, but newer Nvidia and ATI cards run emulators smoothly.

To be specific, I think my desktop is an AMD Phenom II X2 250 (3.0 GHz) with a Nvidia GeForce 6150SE graphics card. It's not the best, but it runs emulators quite decently (without overclocking)
